Driving in Yorkshire

With a rich landscape filled with picturesque villages and sweeping mountain ranges, Yorkshire provides drivers with an idyllic backdrop to enjoy the open road. The Yorkshire Dales are one of the UK's best places to drive, offering breathtaking views along with towns and villages filled with charm and character. Harrogate is a welcoming starting point for drives into the Dales, which includes popular drives along the Buttertubs Pass between Wensleydale and Swaledale, the Long Causeway and Stonesdale lane between Keld and Langthwaite, and many others. Driving from historic York to haunting Whitby via the Moors is another great option, or dip down to the scenic Peaks District in Yorkshire's south.

Yorkshire's countryside is also the host of exciting motorsport activities. For anyone wishing to enjoy the fast and furious pace of a race circuit or simply enjoy a family-friendly event, there is a variety of venues and events to satisfy your need for speed. Popular venues include the British Automobile Racing Club Yorkshire Centre at Harewood close to the Wharfe Valley, a destination for hill climb events and fans. The venue also hosts the British Hillclimb Chanmpionship as well as special competitions for classic and historic cars in early summer. The York Motorsports Village is a thrilling family-friendly indoor leisure attraction, while Hull Carting offers a National Karting Association-approved facility and one of the UK's largest circuits. Speedways include the Croft Circuit close to Dalton-on-Tees, which hosts British Touring Car Championship, British Superbike and other racing events. Off-road adventures can be found at the Camp Hill near Bedale, Live for Today in Harrogate, and the North of England Activity Centre in Ruffork near York, and Yorkshire Outdoors in Thirsk. Most events and races are held during warmer months, particularly between May and October.

Automobile enthusiasts will find a wide range of clubs and events to satisfy their love of cars and driving. A number of driving clubs operate throughout Yorkshire, including regional chapters of leading manufacturers such as Porsche, Vauxhall and others. There are also home-grown clubs for British automotive brands such as Land Rover. These clubs offer opportunities for drivers to meet and discuss their vehicles, while also staging social events that run the gambit from competitive races to social nights to road trips. Other events hosted throughout the year include auctions with a selection of vehicles ranging from rare classics to newer contemporary models. Driving tours also provide an opportunity to be guided through all that Yorkshire has to offer.
